Description
The Pochote tree (Bombacopsis qunata), has a trunk covered with sharp spines that can project as much as an inch from its trunk. It is common the Guanacaste province along the Pacific side of the country.
The tree is used for lumber because it grows straight and tall. The wood is white. It is also known as a spiny cedar tree but is a broad-leaf deciduous tree, losing its leaves during the dry season.
I photographed this tree on the golf course at the Peninsula Papagayo in Costa Rica.
