Description
Queen's University Belfast was founded by the Royal Charter in 1845. Founded by Queen Victoria, the Queen's University in Ireland, was designed to be a nondenominational alternative to Trinity College Dublin which was controlled by the Anglican Church. It was the first university in northern Ireland.
The dark red brick Elizabethan structure with pale sandstone edgings and stained glass windows was built in 1849 and designed by Sir Charles Lanyon. It features a central tower with pinnacles and gabled structures along the front.
Today, there are approximately 23,000 students from the UK and Ireland and more than 80 other countries that attend, which is a far cry from its modest beginnings of 90 students.
The statue is a war memorial by sculptor, Sir Thomas Brock. It was created after WWI of an angel holding a fallen soldier in one hand and a wreath of victory aloft in her other hand. It commemorates the members of the University who fell in WW1 and then panels were added for WWII.
