Description
Why is it that we rarely are satisfied with the features we are born with? Freckles are beautiful. Yet, I can't recall ever meeting someone who loved their freckles! Brown, hair, straight hair, round face, thin face, we wished we looked different!
I have made portraits of my granddaughter, Zoey, since she was born. In her first month, we made them weekly. Then we made them monthly until she turned 1. Then we did them yearly until she turned 4. She loudly protested having her portrait made after that one. You know, that stage they go through where they make faces, pout, turn away. So I've waited patiently for her to allow me to capture her delicate and beautiful self again.
She is now seven. I've waited long enough! I 'encouraged' her to have a portrait made to give her mother for Mother's Day. She hesitantly agreed. And this portrait was made. I love all the clothing changes and dancing and fun we had making these. But I especially love closeups of her soulful eyes, freckles, and delicate beauty.
She is a drama queen, a storyteller, a funny little live-wire that reminds me of someone I know. She knows she's smart. She has yet to learn she's beautiful. As an only child until her 9 month old brother came along, she is trying to learn about sharing and being kind to others. After all, she is the apple of his eye. She no longer has to wonder what life is like with siblings; the good and the bad of it all: A complaint her mother, who is an only child, always had.
As she reads him bedtime stories with her dramatic ways, I think how lucky they are to have each other and how lucky I am to be their grandmother.
