Description
This farmer’s white barn and silo reflected into the pond caught my attention daily years ago on my drive to work. I kept waiting for a perfect sky; the pond to not be filled with duck weed, the grass not to look unruly. I finally decided to photograph it one day when it felt like it was as close as I may ever get to perfect. It was cool Springtime. I sold this image often in the tiny town where I lived at the time.
I still waited for the perfect day. And one day I drove by and it was gone. Entirely gone. I pulled over and cried. True story. The local church had purchased the property and tore it all down to make way for their compound. Broke my heart.
It is a reminder that what a photographer does is important. We capture history. We preserve it. I still look at this image and wonder why the wood wasn’t saved to build it somewhere else or keep the silo as a landmark. The farmlands shrink. Subdivisions grow. And treasures like this are continually leaving our landscape. If we were in Europe, it wouldn’t be like that. I wish we would do more preservation. In the meantime, I will continue to document the countryside wherever I go if for no other reason than to remind me of a time gone by.
