Description
There is something about a peony. Although I love all flowers. Peonies are still my favorite flower. Spring's greatest gift to me. This closeup of the first bloom of the season here in Michigan excites me for many reasons; for the promise of the beauty of the garden's new season, for the intricate beauty in its lack of symmetry in the petals from the way they layer together, their petal shape itself, right to the edges all being varied. This is truly not common in most flowers. A peony marches to the beat of a different drummer. She's 'different'. Like me.
Even the color of a peony in what looks like one color is nothing but when you get up close. Notice the soft, pale hint of peach to the right side of the center in this image. Notice the variations of pink in the upper right-hand corner of her flat petals.
This peony is known as Phyllis in my garden. Most of my flowers have names. Phyllis is astonishing in her color and show. And I'm honored to have her gracing my garden. She was very prolific this year with about two dozen blooms that were the size of dinner plates and this is only her second year here. So she's happy. And the makes me happy!
