Description
It was the opportunity of a lifetime to see the infamous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I had one brief chance to capture it. As a tourist, we were told not to travel with our cameras. It made us targets for thieves. But this day, I broke my camera down and carried it in a discreet bag.
Of course, the mountain would be covered in fog and pouring the rain in buckets. Isn't that always the way? Laughing. So I decided that I would merely enjoy the moment, feel it, experience the opportunity fully and let go of my notions of what I had hoped it would be.
Ironically, exactly one time when I was up right in front of him and this time here when I was at a platform far below him, the skies parted briefly. I will never forget being soaked all the way through, trying to keep my camera dry and forget about everything else, and then he appeared. It gives me goosebumps remembering it. As a person who doesn't go to church but certainly is a believer, I wish I could explain the sensation. I don't believe I will ever forget it.
There was no opportunity to photograph the city down below so I could show the perspective of exactly how high up this statue is. The mist rolled everywhere in dense as well as wispy formations everywhere. That in and of itself was beautiful. And when we got down below, the sun was shining.
Not every image is the perfect one because the sky is blue and the sun is shining with big, white puffy clouds. Sometimes, the perfect image is a gray day, filled with rolling fog, rain, and a moment you will remember a lifetime.
It is a mystical journey to travel to see this statue. It is truly one of the marvels of the world.

Thank you, Patrice. When the weather was so bad, I certainly couldn't take the classic images of this iconic landmark. Standing underneath it, I could barely see it. LOL. Challenged me to think outside the box and be patient.... :)
