Description
The poinsettia is a perennial flower that grows into shrubs as tall as 10 feet in warm climates like Mexico. Here in Michigan, where I am, they are acquired at Christmas time and are known as the Christmas flower here.
Every year, I hope to make one great photograph of a plant. It doesn't always happen. The plant has to be the right color, size, and stage of growth. The light needs to be right. I need time... all things that don't necessarily occur easily at the holidays, as it's such a busy time.
One year, my mother got this gorgeous plant from my brother and his wife. It was huge and the most beautiful shade of flame red I ever saw. Truly. I actually thought about it all night at the bed and breakfast where we stayed, hoping the light would accommodate me the next day. Artificial light NEVER works for them, I swear. I think it's fascinating that these brilliant red petals aren't petals at all but rather are leaves!
So this was my favorite. And she's a beauty. I was very pleased. I hope you enjoy it too.

Great detail and a beautiful shade of red, which is sometimes a difficult color in photography
Jill Love replied:
Thank you, Michelle! Yes, the shade of red is actually unusual for a poinsettia. That really struck me. And I worked hard to keep it! Because you are so right, red is tough!
