Description
I used to have a pond with cattails and yellow iris in it in Michigan. I learned so much from that pond. I used to see these ugly creatures crawl out of the pond and rest on the leaves of the tall grasses to these plants. And then I realized that they turned into dragonflies! The larvae of dragonflies start out in the water, crawl out, break open the shells and emerge from the body of the bug, let their wings dry, and take flight in the summertime.
This particular dragonfly is a Twelve-Spotted Skimmer; three spots on each wing. Its scientific name is Libellula pulchella.
