Description
The Colosseum in Rome, Italy, here in panoramic view inside, is an historical treasure. It is an oval amphitheatre in the center of Rome. It is built out of travertine limestone, volcanic rock, and concrete.
In historic times, it held 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. The construction was completed in AD 80. The colosseum was used for gladiator contests, public spectacles such as the mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, and dramas based on classical mythology.
Over time, it has been substantially ruined by earthquakes and stone robbers. It is still an iconic symbol throughout the world. In 2018, it was the most popular tourist attraction in the world with 7.4 million visitors.
