Description
Italy is a gorgeous country. For an artist, Florence is the city that one MUST travel to. This iconic bridge is a tourist mecca. The neighborhoods on either side of the Ponte Vecchio Bridge, known as the Bridge of Gold, are highly sought-after locations for rental apartments and Airbnbs.
While travelers know the bridge for its jewelry shops, its history makes it even more interesting. Beneath the glitz of jewels is a bridge that has stood the test of time.
The Ponte Vecchio – meaning old bridge – has been a fixture of Florence’s ancient streets since the 13th century. When it was built it served as the first bridge across the Arno River, and since then has endured hundreds of years and numerous wars. After World War II it was once again the only bridge in Florence.
The Medici family – famous for their patronage of the arts that made Florence a center of the Renaissance – moved in across the river to the famous Piti Palace and began using the bridge when getting around the city. It was the Medici’s who converted the bridge into a place for jewelers and gold salesmen, thus the name ‘Bridge of Gold’. On a stormy day, with the sun low and casting a golden glow over the city when it peaked out from behind the clouds, I captured this image of the city and the bridge. I gave it an added gold cast, of course. And textured and digitized it for a more romantic, painterly affect to match the Renaissance city that it is.
